Takeaways
The ‘Takeaway’ series of housing has been in development for over 30 years by world renowned architect Gabriel Poole.
Each home is completed entirely in the Gateway Manufacture factory, including all fittings, electricity and plumbing, ready to be pieced together and connected to facilities on site. This allows each component to be tuned towards cost efficiency.
Takeaways are truly modular, allowing custom designs for your requirements. Modules can even be added on at a later date, should you or your family wish to expand. You may, for example, wish to add another bedroom module if you happen to acquire a new permanent visitor.
The system allows homes to be flat-packed, containerised, and delivered to almost anywhere. They can be constructed on site entirely by semi-skilled labour and one supervisor. A one bedroom design, for example, can be completed in approximately 3-5 days with a working bathroom and bedroom module on site within hours of it being delivered if appropriate facilities are available. After completion it is ready to be connected to power and water by an electrician and plumber. This system eliminates much of the time spent on site by regular building methods and allows for production in a more controlled environment to ensure a high standard of quality.
You’ll be amazed how simply your home will come together!
Environmentally Friendly, Energy Efficient
Takeaways use timber framing that is made entirely of renewable and sustainable timber resources and does not deplete our precious forests. Timber is more energy efficient to produce from its raw form than other comparable building materials, is biodegradable, renewable and reusable. Where possible, products used inside the house; the flooring system, for example, are recyclable.
Please visit "Timber - Environmentally A Wise Choice" by Timber Queensland for more information on how timber construction is environmentally friendly.
The passive design, featuring ‘breathing’ walls, will allow the homes to be lived in comfortably without the need for air-conditioning or heating because it has been specifically created to move hot air out, and cool air in hot conditions. We discourage the use of air conditioning, we will if required fit the necessary in wall piping so the clients may organize the installation of units outside our contract commitments.
Takeaways are truly the future of building.
Built to Last
“Wind acting on a building is a major factor in designing the structure of a building, eg. for bracing and tie-down. To simplify the process, areas are classified due to their geographic region and location relative to the coast, either cyclonic (C) or non-cyclonic (N) and their exposure to wind (fully sheltered is 1, fully exposed is 4). Thus a wind classification of N2 is non-cyclonic reasonably sheltered (average design wind speed is 33 mps) and whereas C3 would be cyclonic partially shelter (average design wind speed is 60 mps).”
- Open Learning Institute of Tafe, Glossary of Building Terms
Takeaway homes will come with a standard Australian wind speed rating of C2 - (W50C), and an option to upgrade to C3 - (W60C). These designs ratings should render them safe in most conditions to be encountered in this country.
Significant effort has been put into termite protection. The floor system and foundations have termite protection built in, and timber is treated according to Australian Standards.
Building System
We believe the product we are now fabricating in factory has achieved a level of simplicity which will allow for fast and easy construction.
As we do not have builders outside the Cairns area we provide the following options
We supply the kit as negotiated with the client and deliver it to site.
The recipient may:
- Elect to construct the kit as an ‘owner builder’
- Have access to a builder who would take on the construction contract
- In areas where we do manage to set up specific builders - may elect to have one of the builders carry out the construction.
Design Work
- One off designs. The client will deal direct with the Architects GEPDC and will sign a Client/Architect agreement. This agreement can be found here.
- Alterations to Standard Designs. Standard designs are those costed and posted on the web site.
The Architects will provide a service to alter or add to existing designs. Where we take on work of this nature the client will be required to sign a Client/Architect agreement with GEPDC.
With services 1 & 2 the client will account directly to the Architect.
